A Los Angeles VPS
with its backups already included.

Every ServerCrate server comes with its own encrypted Restic backup vault, from 25 GB on SC-0 to 500 GB on SC-3. KVM on NVMe, full root, a dedicated IPv4 from SC-1, and no restore fees. From $3 a month, renewing at the price you started on.

Why it is included

A server without a backup is a countdown.

Disks fail, upgrades go wrong, a rm -rf runs in the wrong directory, and someone eventually guesses a weak password. None of that is rare, and all of it is survivable if you have a recent copy somewhere else. Most hosts sell backups as an add-on, which means most servers run without one. We decided the vault belongs in the plan.

Every server includes its own encrypted backup vault: 25 GB on SC-0, 100 GB on SC-1, 250 GB on SC-2 and 500 GB on SC-3. The vault is a Restic repository reached over HTTPS, on ZFS-backed storage that is separate from the VPS fleet. If the server breaks, the backups are still there.

Encrypted before it leaves the server

Restic encrypts and authenticates every chunk of data on your server before upload, using a repository password you set. We store ciphertext. Our team has no way to read your files, and nothing on the vault side can quietly alter a snapshot without Restic noticing on the next check. That is the same zero-knowledge model behind our standalone vaults, described on our security page.

File-level, and portable

The vault is not a disk image locked to our platform. You decide what to back up, typically /etc, your application directories and fresh database dumps. Because it is a standard Restic repository, you can restore to a new server here, to a machine at another provider, or to your laptop with any recent Restic release. If you are choosing between tools, see Restic vs Borg.

Your first backup in four commands.

Your vault's repository address is shown in the portal. Install Restic from your distribution, keep the password in a root-only file, and run:

first backup
$sudo apt install -y restic
$export RESTIC_REPOSITORY=rest:https://YOUR-VAULT-ADDRESS/ RESTIC_PASSWORD_FILE=/root/.restic-pass
$restic init
$restic backup /etc /var/www /root/db-dumps
$restic snapshots # lists what is in the vault
# schedule it nightly with a root cron entry:
# 15 3 * * * /usr/local/bin/backup.sh

Dump databases to a file first, for example with pg_dump or mysqldump, so the snapshot holds a consistent copy instead of half-written table files. Store the repository password somewhere off the server as well: without it the backup is unreadable, to us and to you. Our setup guide covers scheduling and retention in more detail.

Practice the restore

A backup you have never restored is a hope, not a plan. Run restic restore latest --target /tmp/restore-test on a spare SC-0 now and then, and run restic check to confirm the repository is intact. There are no egress or restore fees, so test as often as you like. We publish our own restore runs on the recovery drill page.

VPS backup questions.

Is the backup vault really included?

Yes. Every server includes its own encrypted backup vault at no extra cost: 25 GB on SC-0, 100 GB on SC-1, 250 GB on SC-2 and 500 GB on SC-3.

Is the vault a disk snapshot of my server?

No. It is a Restic repository. You choose which files and database dumps to back up, and Restic encrypts them on the server before upload. That makes restores portable: you can restore to a new server, another provider or your laptop.

Where does the backup data live?

On ZFS-backed vault storage that is separate from the VPS fleet, so a problem with your server does not take its backups with it.

Can you read my backups?

No. Restic encrypts everything client-side with a password you set. We store ciphertext and never hold your repository password.

Are there fees to restore?

No. There are no egress or restore fees. Restore one file or the whole repository as often as you need.

What if my server needs more backup space?

Move to a larger server plan, which brings a larger vault with it, or add a separate backup vault plan alongside your server.
