Hosted Proxmox Backup Server
an offsite datastore your PVE host is unable to delete

A dedicated PBS datastore in Los Angeles that you add to Proxmox VE like any other Proxmox Backup Server. Backup-only tokens, client-side encryption, and retention, garbage collection and verify run by our team. From $3/mo, no restore fees.

ServerCrate hosts a dedicated Proxmox Backup Server datastore for your Proxmox VE cluster. You add it under Datacenter > Storage > Add > Proxmox Backup Server, point backup jobs at it, and get offsite VM and container backups with full PBS deduplication, incremental transfers and file-level restore. Plans start at $3/mo for 100 GB and run to $22/mo for 2 TB, with annual billing at ten months for twelve.

The part that matters most in an incident: the token we issue is backup-only. It writes new snapshots and reads them for restores, but it has no delete or prune permission. If ransomware or an attacker gets root on your PVE host, your offsite history stays intact, because retention runs on our side, not from the host.

Already running PBS at home and only want a copy of configs and app data? Our Restic vaults cover that, see Proxmox offsite backup with Restic. This page is for full VM and LXC backups to a native PBS target.

What you get

Built for the day the PVE host is the problem.

DatastoreA dedicated datastore with a hard quota on ZFS. Your chunks never share a datastore with another customer.
Access tokenBackup-only. It creates backups and reads them for restores. It holds no delete or prune permission, so a compromised PVE host has no way to remove offsite snapshots.
RetentionRuns on our side. PBS-100 keeps 7 daily, 4 weekly and 3 monthly backups. PBS-500, PBS-1T and PBS-2T keep 14 daily, 8 weekly and 6 monthly. Ask our team if you need a different policy.
MaintenanceGarbage collection runs daily to reclaim space from pruned snapshots. Verify jobs run weekly and re-read your chunks against their checksums.
EncryptionClient-side PBS encryption is supported and recommended. The key is generated on your PVE host and stays there. We never see it.
TransportProxmox VE connects to pbs.servercrate.net on port 8007 over TLS with a publicly trusted certificate.
Web interfaceBrowse snapshots and restore files at https://pbs.servercrate.net with your web-interface password, realm Proxmox Backup authentication server. This address sits on our web edge with post-quantum TLS.
LocationLos Angeles, California, US West Coast.
FeesNone beyond the plan. No egress fees, no restore fees.

Add the datastore to Proxmox VE.

After checkout, open Proxmox offsite in our portal and click Create datastore. The portal shows four values once, so save them before you leave the page: the datastore name (sc-...), the username (in the form xxxx@pbs!pve), the API token secret, and a separate web-interface password. Then, in the Proxmox VE web interface:

  1. Go to Datacenter > Storage > Add > Proxmox Backup Server.
  2. ID: any name, for example servercrate. Server: pbs.servercrate.net.
  3. Username: the username from the portal. Password: the API token secret. Datastore: your sc-... datastore name.
  4. Fingerprint: leave it empty. Our certificate is publicly trusted.
  5. On the Backup Retention tab, tick Keep all backups. Retention runs on our side.
  6. On the Encryption tab, choose Auto-generate a client encryption key, then save the key somewhere off the host.
  7. Click Add, then create a job under Datacenter > Backup with the new storage as the target.

The same entry in /etc/pve/storage.cfg looks like this. The token secret lives separately in /etc/pve/priv/storage/servercrate.pw, never in storage.cfg. The prune-backups keep-all=1 line matters: retention runs on our side and the token has no delete rights, so Proxmox VE should never try to prune this storage itself.

/etc/pve/storage.cfg
pbs: servercrate
server pbs.servercrate.net
datastore sc-XXXX
username XXXX@pbs!pve
content backup
prune-backups keep-all=1

Prefer the shell? pvesm writes the same entry, stores the secret in the right place and generates the encryption key in one step:

bash, on any PVE node
root@pve:~# pvesm add pbs servercrate \
--server pbs.servercrate.net \
--datastore sc-XXXX \
--username 'XXXX@pbs!pve' \
--password 'TOKEN_SECRET' \
--content backup --prune-backups keep-all=1 \
--encryption-key autogen

# copy the generated key off the host before you rely on it
root@pve:~# cat /etc/pve/priv/storage/servercrate.enc

# confirm the storage is online, then run a first backup
root@pve:~# pvesm status --storage servercrate
root@pve:~# vzdump 100 --storage servercrate --mode snapshot
INFO: Finished Backup of VM 100

The first backup sends every chunk. After that, PBS sends only changed chunks, so nightly jobs stay small even for large VMs. Restore whole VMs and containers from the same storage entry in Proxmox VE, or sign in at https://pbs.servercrate.net with your web-interface password to browse snapshots and download individual files.

We built our plans for homelabs and small clusters that want a US West Coast target, small entry sizes, retention managed for them, and a token model where the host has no path to delete its own offsite history.

FAQ

Questions before you add the datastore.

It is a real Proxmox Backup Server datastore. You add it in Proxmox VE as storage type Proxmox Backup Server, so you keep incremental backups, deduplication, live restore and file-level restore. Each customer gets a dedicated datastore with a hard quota on ZFS.
No. The API token we issue is backup-only. It can write new backups and read them back for restores, but it has no permission to delete or prune snapshots. Retention runs on our side, so a compromised PVE host has no way to wipe your offsite history.
Not if you enable client-side encryption, which we recommend. The PBS encryption key is generated and kept on your Proxmox VE host. We never receive it, so the datastore holds only encrypted chunks. Keep a copy of the key somewhere off the host, because without it the backups are unrecoverable.
Retention runs on our side. PBS-100 keeps 7 daily, 4 weekly and 3 monthly backups. PBS-500, PBS-1T and PBS-2T keep 14 daily, 8 weekly and 6 monthly. Garbage collection runs daily and verify jobs run weekly. If you need a different retention, ask our team.
Yes. Sign in at https://pbs.servercrate.net with your web-interface password and the realm Proxmox Backup authentication server to browse snapshots and download files. Restores of whole VMs and containers run from Proxmox VE as usual. There are no egress or restore fees.
The datastore is in Los Angeles, California. Proxmox VE connects to pbs.servercrate.net on port 8007 over TLS with a publicly trusted certificate, so the Fingerprint field stays empty. You need only the datastore name, username and token secret from our portal.
