Encrypted cloud storage
that locks before it leaves your browser.
ServerCrate Backup is drag-and-drop storage that encrypts every file in your browser before upload. We hold ciphertext, you hold a 24-word recovery key, and earlier versions of your files are kept. Plans start at $2 a month for 100 GB.
How it works
Your browser encrypts. We store the result.
Most cloud storage encrypts your files after they arrive, with keys the provider holds. That protects against a stolen hard drive in a data center. It does not protect against the provider itself, a compromised admin account, or a legal demand for your data. ServerCrate Backup works the other way around.
When you drag a file onto the page, your browser encrypts it before a single byte goes over the network. What reaches us is ciphertext. The keys that open it come from secrets only you hold, and they never leave your device. We have no way to read your documents or browse your photos, and we have nothing useful to hand over if someone asks. On top of that, the connection to our edge uses post-quantum TLS with the hybrid X25519MLKEM768 key exchange, so even the encrypted upload is protected against record-now, decrypt-later attacks. You can verify that yourself.
Drag, drop, done
There is no app to install and no sync client running in the background. Open ServerCrate Backup in a modern browser, drag in files or folders, and they upload encrypted. Download them back from the same page whenever you need them.
Versions for the mistakes everyone makes
Saved over the good copy of a document? Uploaded the wrong edit of a spreadsheet? When a changed file is uploaded again, the earlier version is kept. Personal keeps 10 versions, Plus keeps 30 and Family keeps 60, so an overwrite becomes a quick restore rather than a lost afternoon.
The 24-word recovery key, honestly.
When you set up your account, you are shown a recovery key made of 24 words. It is the master key to everything you store. This is the part of zero-knowledge storage we want you to understand before you sign up, not after.
- We do not keep a copy. That is what makes the encryption meaningful. It also means our support team is unable to reset it or recover your files without it.
- Write it down on paper. Keep one copy at home and another somewhere separate, such as with a trusted relative or in a safe deposit box. A password manager is a good third copy.
- Do not photograph it or email it to yourself. A copy in an ordinary cloud photo library undoes the protection you are paying for.
If that trade feels right, you are the person this product is for. If you would rather have a provider who can reset everything for you, that is a reasonable choice too, and it is a different kind of service.
Who it is for
ServerCrate Backup suits people who want a private, offsite copy of the files that matter: scanned records, tax documents, family photos, creative work, research. Plus is a comfortable size for one person with a large photo library, and Family gives a household 2 TB in one plan.
If you run servers, a NAS or a fleet of laptops and are comfortable on the command line, our Restic backup vaults are the better fit. They back up automatically on a schedule and restore from the terminal, and we publish real restore runs on our recovery drill page. Our NAS offsite backup guide is a good place to start.

Encrypted cloud storage questions.
Can ServerCrate see my files?
No. Files are encrypted in your browser before they upload, with keys derived from secrets only you hold. We store encrypted data and have no way to open it.
What is the 24-word recovery key?
A list of 24 words shown to you when you set up your account. It is the master key to your encrypted files. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe and offline.
What happens if I lose my recovery key?
We are unable to recover your files for you. That is the cost of real zero-knowledge storage: we never hold a copy of your key. Keep the recovery key in at least two safe places.
How do versions work?
When you upload a changed copy of a file, the previous version is kept. Personal keeps 10 versions, Plus keeps 30 and Family keeps 60, so an accidental overwrite is a restore, not a loss.
Do I need to install anything?
No. ServerCrate Backup runs in a modern browser. Drag files onto the page to upload them, and download them back the same way.
How is this different from your backup vaults?
Backup vaults are Restic repositories for servers and computers, driven from the command line. ServerCrate Backup is for people who want to drag files into a browser and get the same zero-knowledge protection without touching a terminal.
How can I pay?
By card, PayPal, or Bitcoin through our own BTCPay Server. Your price is locked at signup, and every plan carries a 30-day money-back guarantee.
